The ring statistics – how to separate E- and B-modes of cosmic shear correlation functions on a finite interval

چکیده
Aims. Cosmic shear, the distortion of images of distant sources by the tidal gravitational field of the large-scale matter distribution in the Universe, is one of the most powerful cosmological probes. The measured shear field may be due not only to the gravitational lensing effect, but may contain systematic effects from the measurement process or intrinsic alignment of galaxy shapes. One of the main probes for these systematics are the division of the shear field into Eand B-mode shear, where lensing only produces the former. As shown in a recent note, all currently used E-/B-mode separation methods for the shear correlation functions ξ± require them to be measured to arbitrarily small and/or large separations which is of course not feasible in practice. Methods. We derive second-order shear statistics which provide a clean separation into Eand B-modes from measurements of ξ±(θ) over a finite interval only. We call these new statistics the circle and ring statistics, respectively; the latter is obtained by an integral over the former. The mathematical properties of these new shear statistics are obtained, as well as specific expressions for applying them to observed data. Results. It is shown that an E-/B-mode separation can be performed on measurements of ξ± over a finite interval in angular separation, using the ring statistics. We furthermore generalize this result to derive the most general class of second-order shear statistics which provide a separation of Eand B-mode shear on a given angular interval θmin ≤ θ ≤ θmax. In view of these generalization, we discuss the aperture dispersion and the shear dispersion and their relation to the shear correlation functions. Our results will be of practical use particularly for future cosmic shear surveys where highly precise measurements of the shear will become available and where control of systematics will be mandatory.

Measuring cosmic shear with the ring statistics
Context. Commonly used methods to decompose Eand B-modes in cosmic shear, namely the aperture mass dispersion and the E/B-mode shear correlation function, suffer from incomplete knowledge of the two-point correlation function (2PCF) on very small and/or very large scales. The ring statistics, the most recently developed cosmic shear measure, improves on this issue and is able to decompose Eand ...
متن کاملA new cosmic shear function: Optimised E-/B-mode decomposition on a finite interval
The decomposition of the cosmic shear field into Eand B-mode is an important diagnostic in weak gravitational lensing. However, commonly used techniques to perform this separation suffer from mode-mixing on very small or very large scales. We introduce a new E-/B-mode decomposition of the cosmic shear two-point correlation on a finite interval. This new statistic is optimised for cosmological a...
متن کاملImpact of Integration on Straining Modes and Shear-Locking for Plane Stress Finite Elements
Stiffness matrix of the four-node quadrilateral plane stress element is decomposed into normal and shear components. A computer program is developed to obtain the straining modes using adequate and reduced integration. Then a solution for the problem of mixing straining modes is found. Accuracy of the computer program is validated by a closed-form stiffness matrix, derived for the plane rectang...
متن کاملE - and B - mode mixing from incomplete knowledge of the shear correlation ( Research Note )
Aims. We quantify the mixing of the measured cosmic shear Eand B-mode due to the lack of shear correlation measurements on small and large scales, which arises due to the lack of close projected galaxy pairs and the finite field size, respectively. Methods. We calculate the aperture mass statistics 〈M2 ap,⊥〉 and the E-/B-mode shear correlation functions ξE,B± with smalland large-scale cut-offs ...
متن کاملNon Uniform Rational B Spline (NURBS) Based Non-Linear Analysis of Straight Beams with Mixed Formulations
Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed traditionally using conventional finite element basis functions (i.e., cubic Hermite, equi-spaced Lagrange interpolation functions, or spectral/hp Legendre functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, tota...
